drill a hole in simmons hall: results 4/22/2005

an open jury session for the competition was held on 4/22/2005 in simmons hall. seven groups presented their designs, which were discussed with the jurors and the residents between 5:30 and 8:30 pm. all submissions can be seen here (.pdf file).

The jury consisted of the following members:

/ tim bade, project architect on simmons hall at steven holl’s office
/ robert campbell, architectural critic of the boston globe
/ chris hoffman, simmons hall undergraduate resident
/ justin holland, simmons hall undergraduate resident
/ nikki johnson, former simmons hall resident
/ muriel medard, associate housemaster, mit simmons hall
/ karen nilsson, director of mit housing
/ carlo ratti, director of the mit senseable city laboratory
/ mike waters, project architect on simmons hall at perry dean rogers

the jury shortlisted teams 2, 4 and 10. their designs have been voted onlineby the simmons hall community between 1 and 5 may 2005 (midnight). during this period some teams put in place an intersting propaganda. final results were as follow:

team 4: [18 / 76] 24%
team 10: [31 / 76] 41%
team 2: [27 / 76] 36%

therefore, team 10 was awarded the first prize, while two honorable mentions went to teams 2 and 4.

an exhibition on the competition and more generally on 'lived-in simmons hall' is currently planned at the canadian center for architecture in early 2006 (see here the exhibition proposal, .pdf file).
